Bike to the Beach (B2B) started when two friends, Benjamin Dalley and Joey Schmitz, biked their way from Washington, DC, to Bethany Beach, Delaware. Robby Walsh currently serves as the Executive Director of the organization, while founders Benjamin Dalley and Joey Schmitz still serve as board members.

Passion for cycling coupled with a cause worth fighting for is what prompted the formation of Bike to the Beach (B2B). Years later, it became an advocacy organization with many supporters in Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, New York, NY and Boston, MA.

This nonprofit organization seeks to promote biking as a viable way of commuting and reducing carbon emission. In addition, B2B is a firm supporter of Autism Speaks in its bid to change the landscape for people struggling with autism. Bike to the Beach believes that it can promote an active, socially and environmentally conscious community committed to a healthier life and finding solutions for the millions affected by Autism though its events and our partnerships with Autism Speaks and local Autism charities.

Through Bike to the Beach’s pro-active network, it continues to organize events with the goals of educating urbanites on the several benefits of biking and supporting those who suffer from autism.

Benjamin Dalley founded Xebec Enterprises, Inc., in Washington, D.C., in order to provide business and real estate consulting services throughout the area. Previously, Ben Dalley gained entrepreneurial experience through a variety of restaurants and other business endeavors. Benjamin Dalley also assisted with the launch of Bike to the Beach, Inc., where he continues to serve as the operations and development director.

Each year, Bike to the Beach holds a charity bicycle ride in New England to support the efforts of the nonprofit organization Autism Speaks. The ride begins in Boston and finishes in Newport, Rhode Island. Individuals who cannot participate in the ride can contribute through donations of any amount. One 9-year-old girl donated $2 to the organization and accompanied it with a letter that related how important she considered the contribution due to the fact that she has a sister with autism.

Bike to the Beach has several such events each year in various locations across the country in order to benefit autism awareness and research. The organization, which maintains its headquarters in the Washington, D.C., area, aims to involve volunteers across the country in working toward physical and mental health through its fundraising events.

The fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States, autism (as well as its associated disorders) currently impacts an estimated 1 in 88 children. To address the need for more research funding, Bike to the Beach conducts charity bike rides to raise money for autism and promote cycling in general. A non-profit organization, Bike to the Beach promotes rides throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions, in such cities as Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

While the organization’s beginnings date to 1999, Bike to the Beach was officially formed in 2007 and it conducted its first fundraising ride in Washington, D.C. that year. Since its founding, the group has donated funds to Autism Speaks, the largest charity in the U.S. dedicated to finding a cure for the disability.

Benjamin Dalley, one of Bike to the Beach’s founders, is an entrepreneur and business professional based in Washington, D.C. Dalley earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Though many people have a single style of cooking in mind when they think of barbecue, the ingredients, flavors, and methods of barbecuing vary significantly according to geographical region.

North Carolina-style pork barbecue, for instance, relies primarily on salt and vinegar for its flavor. Often, the whole pig is slow cooked over a coal fire for 12 hours to achieve optimal flavor and preserve the meat’s natural juices. South Carolina-style barbecue also primarily features pork, which is often flavored with spicy mustard and vinegar. Chefs prefer local woods such as hickory, pecan, and applewood for smoking the meat.

Kansas City-style barbecue traditionally calls for a wider range of meats, with recipes for chicken, pork, beef, and even lamb. Chefs use rubs that include salt, sugar, and paprika and sauces that are tomato based. In Memphis-style barbecue, chefs use rubs that are both spicy and sweet, and the meat is usually smoked using cherry and hickory wood.

In Texas, beef is the primary meat used for barbecue. In place of sauces, cooks generally use a dry rub that has a base of cayenne peppers, kosher salt, and black pepper. As with the barbecue of the Carolinas, Texas barbecue calls for slow cooking over low heat.

In 2007, five core members joined together in establishing B2B as an official charitable organization. In particular, they sought to align their community-focused group with autism awareness building efforts. At the time, autism was an emerging area of national interest and funds raised initially went to Cure Autism Now (now part of Autism Speaks). Expanded beyond Washington, D.C., to include a New York ride in 2010 and a Boston ride in 2012, Bike to the Beach continues to raise significant funds, with Autism Speaks its primary beneficiary.

As a proud alumnus of Brown University, I enjoy sharing recent headlines from my alma mater. Below is a list I have compiled about the recent goings-on at Brown.

The Ivy League School’s 19th president, Christina Paxson, was inaugurated on October 27, 2012. Ms. Paxson is a noted economist from Princeton.

Brown University researchers have discovered the process by which ingesting silver causes a rare condition in which a person’s skin turns grayish blue, known as argyria. The team of scientists has been studying the environmental aspects of silver for years.

On October 17, 2012, the Dalai Lama delivered an address titled, “A Global Challenge: Creating a Culture of Peace,” as part of the Stephen A. Ogden Jr. ’60 Memorial Lecture on International Affairs series. His Holiness donned a Brown baseball cap and spoke to the youth in attendance, urging them to help bring about a better world through peaceful movements and to take responsibility for environmental causes.
